Is This You?

Maybe you are newly sober and still figuring out who you are without the thing that used to organize your whole day. Maybe you have done a program, worked the steps, and know the behaviors you need to avoid, but you still do not fully understand why you turned to substances or a process addiction in the first place. Maybe you are tired of white knuckling your recovery and want to actually understand the roots of it.

This service is for adults and older teens, 16 and up, who are at least 15 days sober from substances or from a process addiction. If you are currently in detox, this is not the right level of care for you yet, and I want you to have the support you need there first. If you relapse while we are working together, we do not part ways. We look at what happened and keep going.

This work is not a replacement for a 12 step program or intensive outpatient treatment. It is meant to sit alongside it. A program addresses behavior. I address what is underneath the behavior.

What This Often Looks Like

  • Substance Use: Recovery from alcohol or drug use, whether you are freshly sober or years into sobriety and still working through what drove it
  • Gambling: Recovery from betting, casino gambling, or predictive markets, patterns I talk about often in my writing on sports betting and predictive markets
  • Pornography and Sex: Compulsive patterns that feel out of your control and hard to talk about with anyone else
  • Gaming: Using games to escape, numb out, or avoid your actual life
  • Shopping and Spending: Spending as a way to soothe something you cannot yet name
  • Work: Using productivity and achievement to outrun feelings you have not had space to process

How We Work Together

I believe the relationship itself, not a set of techniques, is the greatest intervention in recovery work. My approach is relational psychodynamic, attachment based, and person centered. A 12 step program gives you language and structure for the behavior. My job is to help you understand the drives underneath it, the unconscious reasons you reached for that outlet in the first place.

I am fluent in traditional 12 step language and comfortable working alongside a program you are already part of. But most of our work together looks at your early childhood development, your attachment history, and the trauma that is almost always sitting underneath addiction. People do not start out as addicts. Most people become addicts because of something that happened to them, often long before the addiction itself began. If that sounds like territory you want to explore more directly, this is also where my work in complex trauma therapy comes in, since the two are rarely separate.

I bring myself honestly into the room with you. You get a real relationship, one built on trust strong enough to hold your whole story, not just the parts that are easy to say out loud.

What You Can Expect

This is steady, honest work, not a quick fix. Many clients find they begin to:

  • Understand the actual need that addiction was trying to meet
  • Process the trauma or attachment wounds sitting underneath the behavior
  • Build a sense of identity and stability that does not depend on the addiction
  • Reconnect with community, work, and relationships from a place of choice, not compulsion
  • Move from feeling defeated and unstable to feeling capable of real autonomy

I have seen someone go from active addiction to thriving in their work, their relationships, and their own sense of self in less time than most people expect. It is some of the most purposeful work I do.

Getting Started

  • Step 1: Free Consultation. We will talk for 15 minutes to see if this feels like the right fit and the right timing for you.
  • Step 2: First Session. We will talk through your recovery so far, what has worked, what has not, and what you are hoping to understand.
  • Step 3: Ongoing Work. Steady sessions that go beneath the behavior, at a pace that respects your sobriety and your story.

Taking the First Step

You do not have to have this fully figured out before you show up. Whether you are working through this as an older teen, navigating it during your college years, or coming to it later as an adult, the work is the same. We look at what is underneath the addiction so you can find the freedom and joy that were there before it, and are still there now.

Let us start with a free 15 minute consultation.

Common Questions

A few things people usually want to know before reaching out. If you don't see your question here, feel free to ask during your free consultation.

Do I need to already be in a 12 step program to work with you?

No. Many of my clients are actively working a 12 step program or attending regular meetings, and I encourage that structure. My work sits alongside it, addressing the underlying drives and trauma that a program is not designed to explore.

How many days sober do I need to be before starting therapy with you?

I generally ask that clients be at least 15 days sober from substances or from a process addiction before we begin. If you are currently in detox, that level of care needs to come first, and I am happy to help you find the right next step until you are ready for this work.

What if I relapse while we are working together?

We do not part ways. Relapse is often part of recovery, not a failure of it. If it happens, we look honestly at what led to it and keep working, together.

Can you work with process addictions, or only substances?

Both. I work with substance use, including alcohol and drugs, as well as process addictions like gambling, pornography and sex, gaming, shopping, and work.

Do you work with teens on addiction recovery, or only adults?

Yes, I work with older teens, ages 16 and up, alongside adults. The same 15 day sobriety guideline applies.

Hi, I'm Aaron Helm, LPC-Associate.(1)

Supervised by Katherine Dunham MS, LPC-S, RPT-S™, ADS & Kelsey D'Amore, MS, LPC-S, RPT-S™, ADS.

I work with adults working through hard, heavy stuff, and with kids who are still learning to put words to their feelings. I believe therapy should feel like a real relationship, not a performance, so that's exactly what you'll get with me.
