Is This Your Teen?

Maybe they've pulled away, from you, from friends, from things they used to enjoy. Maybe the mood swings feel bigger than typical teenage moodiness. Maybe something happened, a friendship fell apart, a family change, an identity question they're wrestling with, and they don't know how to talk about it, especially not with you. That's not unusual, and it's not a sign you've failed as a parent. Teens often need someone outside the family to be fully honest with.

What This Often Looks Like

  • Withdrawing from family or friends
  • Increased irritability, anxiety, or low mood
  • Big questions about identity, belonging, or the future
  • Struggling to open up to parents, even when they want to

How We Work Together

Teens can smell a script from a mile away, so I don't use one. My approach is relational psychodynamic and person centered, which means I bring my honest, real self into the room, and I meet your teen exactly where they are, not where I think they should be. That builds trust fast, because most teens have never had an adult be that direct and that non-judgmental with them at the same time. I don't avoid hard topics, and I won't ask your teen to either, but the pace is theirs to set.

What You Can Expect

Sessions are one-on-one and confidential, with the exception of safety concerns, which I'll always explain clearly upfront. I stay in touch with parents at a level that respects your teen's privacy while still keeping you informed. Many parents notice their teen:

  • Opens up more, even outside of session
  • Seems less reactive and more grounded
  • Has language for what they're feeling
  • Feels like they have somewhere to bring the hard stuff

Getting Started

  • Step 1: Free Consultation. A quick call to talk through what's going on and see if this feels like a fit.
  • Step 2: First Session. I meet one-on-one with your teen to start building trust and understand what they're carrying.
  • Step 3: Ongoing Sessions, At Their Pace. Steady, consistent sessions, with check-ins to keep you appropriately informed.

Taking the First Step

Your teen doesn't have to want this yet for it to help. Let's start with a free 15 minute consultation.

Common Questions

A few things people usually want to know before reaching out. If you don't see your question here, feel free to ask during your free consultation.

Will you tell me what my teen says in session?

For the most part, no. Confidentiality helps teens actually open up, and I'll be upfront with you about the limits of that, mainly around safety. I'll stay in touch with you at a level that respects your teen's trust while keeping you appropriately informed.

My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. Now what?

That's common, and it doesn't mean it won't work. Many teens come in resistant and end up finding real value once they realize I'm not going to lecture them or take a side.

What age range do you see for teen therapy?

I work with teens starting around age 13. If your child is younger, play therapy is usually a better fit, worth discussing in a free consultation.

How is this different from talking to a school counselor?

School counselors are valuable, but their role and time are limited. Individual therapy gives your teen a consistent, private relationship focused entirely on them, without the school context.

What if my teen needs more support than talk therapy, like a diagnosis or medication?

If that becomes relevant, I'll talk with you about appropriate next steps and referrals. My role is to provide steady, relational therapy, and to help connect you with additional support when it's needed.
