Is This Your Child?

Maybe it's the arguing over every little thing. Maybe it's the meltdowns that seem way out of proportion to what triggered them, or the defiance that shows up at home but not at school, or the other way around. You've tried the sticker charts, the timeouts, the consequences, and nothing seems to stick for long. You love your child fiercely, and you're also exhausted. Both of those things can be true.

What This Often Looks Like

  • Frequent power struggles over small requests
  • Tantrums or meltdowns that feel bigger than the situation
  • Trouble following directions or transitioning between activities
  • Aggression toward siblings, peers, or parents
  • Behavior that's very different at home versus school

Big behaviors are almost always big feelings a child doesn't yet have the tools to manage. That's not an excuse for the behavior, it's the reason play therapy works.

How We Work Together

Instead of just managing behavior from the outside, I help your child understand and work through what's driving it from the inside. Through play, kids act out what they can't yet say, control, frustration, feeling unseen, fear. I follow their lead, and over time, help them build the emotional vocabulary and coping skills that reduce the behaviors you're seeing at home. I'll also check in regularly with you, so we're working as a team, not just handing you a report card after each session.

What You Can Expect

Many parents notice their child:

  • Has fewer and shorter outbursts
  • Can name what's bothering them instead of just reacting
  • Responds better to redirection
  • Feels more connected to you, not just less defiant

Common Questions

A few things people usually want to know before reaching out. If you don't see your question here, feel free to ask during your free consultation.

Is my child's behavior 'bad,' or is something else going on?

Almost always, it's something else. Defiance and big behaviors are usually a child's way of expressing something they can't yet put into words. Play therapy helps us find out what that is.

We've already tried consequences and reward charts. Will this be different?

Yes. Behavior charts manage what you see on the outside. Play therapy works on what's driving the behavior from the inside, which tends to create more lasting change.

My child behaves fine at school but not at home. Is that normal?

Very. Home is often where kids feel safest to let their guard down, which means the hardest behaviors sometimes show up there first.

Do you work with parents too, or just the child?

Both. I meet with you regularly so you understand what's happening in session and have practical ways to support your child at home.

How long before we see a change?

It varies by child, but many families start noticing small shifts within the first several sessions. We'll track progress together along the way.
